While weighted blankets have been around for a few decades, they’re gaining popularity in the sleep world lately. Why? Well, because they do more than just keep you comfy and cozy while you slumber. The benefits of weighted blankets help people with anxiety, PTSD, restless legs syndrome, and many more fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. They’re also great for just about anyone looking for a decent night’s sleep. (Uh - that’s everyone!)
6 Things to Think About When Choosing a Weighted Blanket
But choosing a weighted blanket can be a bit overwhelming, thanks to the rising number of weighted blankets coming on the market. There are a lot of things to consider when thinking about how to choose a weighted blanket.
Lucky for you, we’ve put together a little list for you to make sure you focus on the important things.
1. Fabric
When choosing a weighted blanket, it’s important to note its fabric. Not all materials are created equal. When you’re sleeping, you want something soft, comfortable, and breathable. Unfortunately, not all weighted blankets meet these criteria.
Bamboo: This is our top choice. That’s because it’s the best choice! Bamboo is soft, breathable, and comfortable to sleep under! Unlike other fabrics, bamboo won’t make you hot. Not to mention, it’s a natural option, especially ours. At Weighted Evolution, we use only natural, non-toxic materials in our weighted blanket construction.
Cotton: When you think of blanket materials, the first thing you probably think of is cotton. That’s because it makes up the bulk of bedding materials. It’s soft, but depending on the thread count, it might not be as soft as bamboo. (Which is always a high thread count.) Cotton also isn’t as cooling as bamboo.
Polyester: If you choose a blanket made of polyester, you’re not getting the best weighted blanket. Likely, you’re getting a cheaply made blanket since polyester is a man-made material and definitely is not as soft or cooling as bamboo. Some “fuzzy” weighted blankets are made of polyester, so beware. If you need fuzzy, check out our Sensory + Bamboo Fleece Weighted Blanket.
2. Removable Cover
When choosing a weighted blanket, we recommend getting one with a removable cover for washing. That way, the construction of the inner weighted blanket is safely protected. And when your weighted blanket gets a little dirty, you can simply remove the cover and wash it, rather than sticking the whole (heavy) blanket in the washer. If you did that, not only would you have to have the strength of a bodybuilder to get that wet thing out, but you’d also risk damaging the inner construction.
At Weighted Evolution, all of our weighted blankets have removable covers for easy care and washing. We don’t recommend risking our blankets’ integrity (or your back) by attempting to wash the inner blanket in the washing machine.
3. Size
When thinking about how to choose a weighted blanket, size matters. Our recommendation is to purchase a weighted blanket between 8-12% of your body weight. You definitely don’t want a weighted blanket that’s too heavy, but you also don’t want one too light.
Unlike typical blankets, keep in mind your weighted blanket shouldn’t drape over the sides of your bed. If it did, you’d be wrestling to keep it on top of you all night. And that just defeats the purpose of getting a good night’s sleep now, doesn’t it?

4. Weight Materials
How about a weighted blanket with a bunch of little marbles in it? That sounds comfy!
Um, no. We don’t think so either.
That’s why it’s essential to consider what those little magical weights inside your weighted blanket are made of. Some weighted blanket manufacturers use little pellets made of plastic or even steel. (I know, EW!) Obviously, these don’t conform well to your body, and they’re lumpy. (AKA uncomfy.)
Others use sand to fill their weighted blankets. Again, EW! While you might think sand would conform well to your body, it doesn’t spread evenly. But you know what does? Our proprietary “Sensory Sand” is made out of super-tiny micro-glass beads. Our Sensory Sand distributes evenly, conforms to your body, and allows optimal airflow, allowing you to receive all the wonderful benefits of weighted blankets. Win-win-win!

5. Pocket Construction
Have you ever had a hole in the pocket of a blazer or purse pocket? It’s no fun - stuff you put in your pocket tends to migrate to the inner lining and seems lost forever unless you decide to rip the seam and retrieve whatever it is you’re looking for.
Well, the same goes for weighted blankets. Some manufacturers cut corners by making their weighted blankets using single-seam stitching. But not here at Weighted Evolution. To ensure our Sensory Sand stays put and delivers the optimal benefits of weighted blankets, we use 4” double-stitched pockets. That glorious Sensory Sand isn’t going anywhere!
6. Awesome Company
Okay, we know this one might not be on your radar, but hear us out. At Weighted Evolution, we’re not in this business solely to make money. We’re in this business because we truly value helping others live their best life possible. We put you and our community ahead of profits.
